Capello: Hargreaves can still make England World Cup squad

Owen Hargreaves has been warned by England coach Fabio Capello, the Manchester United player needs to be playing regularly if he wants to make his World Cup squad. Hargreaves is back in training with Manchester United after 14 months out following two knee operations.

Hargreaves, who impressed at the 2006 World Cup, has been tipped to make Fabio Capello's squad for the finals in South Africa, but the Italian admits time is running out for the 28-year-old to prove his fitness as he will only choose fully-fit players in his 23-man squad.

"I spoke with him [Hargreaves] two months ago, I met him in Manchester and he was just ready to start training but now he is not fit," Capello told Sky Sports News.

"He has six months to recover good form but he needs to play.

"I will choose players that will be fit in May and players that play all the games.

"I think he can [make the squad] because he has got time to recover everything, but he needs to play.

"If players don't play they will not be with me." Capello admits he has as good as chosen his 23 players to make the trip to South Africa next summer.

"More or less I know all the players [for the final squad]," added Capello. "I check with the players, but we have to wait because probably when I will decide the 23 players that stay with me I hope my best players will be fit."
