Can Cellino satisfy the expectant Leeds Utd faithful?

COMMENT: As Leeds United fought out another disappointing result at home, the banner on the advertising hoarding on the east stand of the stadium was playing a small tune to itself.

The tune went along the lines of: "Can you see me Massimo, can you hear me?"

The silent whisper of discontent was made even greater with the missed opportunity to defeat Middlesborough at home on a Monday night.

Just imagine if United were in Middlesborough's position (2nd in the Championship). Would the supporters be so disgruntled as they are now?

I very much doubt so, and I can't help but escape the feeling that Massimo Cellino brought about a negative vibe among the Don Revie faithful as soon as he walked through the Elland Road gates.

His tax evasion cases have certainly not helped his cause, but the fact that in the two years that he has owned the club, despite spending more money than previous owners GFH, we are still stuck in the mud, unable to make any progression.

But history suggests owners need time to build their clubs into top institutions, right? Tell that to Roman Abramovich and the billionaire Emirati owners of Manchester City.

Cellino has done very well to put the Whites in a financially stable position off the pitch, however, the worrying and main problem is he is unable to provide the 'real money' that the likes of Middlesborough and Derby County have spent this season.

If we are to make a challenge any time soon and reach the Premier League he must be prepared to buy big and not sell...But is it too late?

Onto the manager, and I believe that Steve Evans has done a 'good' job since he took over from Uwe Rosler. He hasn't worked wonders, but he has made some shrewd acquisitions, most notably the signing of Toumani Diagouraga from Brentford, who looks to be just the sort of player needed in midfield - a calm, composed and no-rush type.

He certainly was an important figure on Monday against the Teesside club, and he is one of the players we will need to keep hold of if they are to make a challenge next campaign.

In terms of the future, Evans could be the man to steer the ship towards the top flight of English football.

If he is given time, something that Rosler wasn't, he will be able to build his own squad and subsequently a starting 11 that he wants. But again he needs the cash and the backing from his owner to make this conceivable.

I also believe that he is the sort of manager that epitomises the Championship - passionate, gritty, determined and hard-working. He needs to improve certain areas on the pitch, such as the style of football.

Under Rosler, we played a free-flowing attacking style, but Evans' focus has more been on the defensive side which is understandable. If he can get the balance between playing attractive football and defensive steadiness, he will be on his way to laying the foundations of a good team.

Stability is such an understated word in football.

Leeds though they had it under GFH, and at the start of the 2013/14, had a new manager in Brian McDermott, the team was flying high in the league, and everything seemed to be rosy. That is until cash flow problems started to unearth and suddenly David Haigh and his mates fled quicker than Raheem Sterling when he left Liverpool for Man City.

What I can't understand about the owner is that he trusts a manager to such an extent that he is willing to give Rosler £3million to spend on Chris Wood, and then sacks the manager after 11 games. This is the instability and confusion that gets me baffled as a Leeds fan.

But we can't just spend money on a striker, we need a top-class 'Championship' defender, someone like Jason Shackell or Richard Keogh, both at Derby. Or a Curtis Davies at Hull City. I am sure that if a large offer landed in the inbox of the Rams or Tigers, they may struggle to turn it down.

After all, who would turn down Leeds United?

Most importantly, we need stability all over the pitch, and that means spending money.

But can Cellino provide it? The fans certainly don't think so.
