Borussia Dortmund midfielder Mikel Merino is undergoing a medical with Newcastle United.

Sky Sports understands the 21-year old will sign with the Magpies on a season-long loan deal, with a view to make the move permanent next summer.

The Spain U21 international will become Rafa Benitez's fifth signing of the summer following the arrivals off Jacob Murphy, Florian Lejeuene, Javier Manquillo and Christian Atsu.

Merino made just nine appearances across all competitions for the Bundesliga club last season.
