Butcher eager to give opportunity to Hibernian squad

Terry Butcher says he won't think about bringing in any new players until he has had a firsthand look at those in the current Hibernian squad.

The former Inverness Caledonian Thistle boss takes charge of his first Hibs match against St Mirren this weekend but is hoping to get as much as possible out of today's charges rather than look to the winter transfer market.

"January is a long way off," Butcher said. "I am not looking at that. I am delighted with what I have got here, I must stress that, I am not looking elsewhere at the moment.

"I am looking within and saying 'what can you do, how can you improve, what will it take, and what can you give Hibernian football club when it comes to games?'

"(Assistant) Maurice (Malpas) and I have talked about a team for Saturday and it is up to us to put out a team based on what we will have seen.

"I will disappoint a lot of players when I name the team but the ones that are named need to make sure they do enough to stay there.

"But they have certainly responded in the right way and shown me that they want to be here and play for Hibs, entertain and win football games.

"If we can take what they have done so far in training and transmit that onto the pitch in games I will be quite happy because it has been very impressive."
