Bournemouth forward Jermain Defoe has stated that Marco van Basten's iconic volley in 1988 was better than his effort against Crystal Palace during the weekend.
Defoe scored a stunning half-volley during Bournemouth's 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday and the strike from the veteran was reminiscent to van Basten's iconic goal against the Soviet Union in the 1988 European Championships.
While comparing the two goals though, Defoe has insisted that the legendary Dutchman's effort was better by saying: "van Basten's was better because his was on the full volley. His came in and it was probably harder.
"But it's nice, he is someone I looked up to. I actually had a van Basten DVD I used to watch when I was at Tottenham."
