Bournemouth striker Defoe eyes England World Cup spot

Jermain Defoe has lofty ambitions for his debut season at Bournemouth.

The 34-year old recently joined the Cherries from Sunderland on a free transfer and hopes his fresh start can give him a chance to make England's squad for Russia next year.

Defoe said: "It's only normal to have one eye on the World Cup.

"Every English player will want to get in to that squad but it's based on merit, so you'll have to play well for your club.

"I'll focus on doing that and then if I get the opportunity to play in the World Cup again, it would be a dream."

Defoe was recalled to the England squad in March for the first time in three years.
