"I think Jay will say he wasn't making the point at me," McCarthy said after their friendly defeat to Reading. "But I've had Reading's staff asking me why he's doing it to me. I'm sure it was made at me. He made one gesture, so I made another - I took him off.
"I know it does happen and it's borne out of frustration but I won't take that from anybody.
"Perhaps he thinks he should be playing. But surely going on and scoring a goal is the best way to show the manager you should be in the team."
