Bolton Wanderers defender Gary Cahill is determined to keep his place in England's starting XI.
He is hoping to be part of an exciting new era under Fabio Capello with fellow defenders in Phil Jones and Chris Smalling, both of Manchester United, breaking into the squad.
Ahead of Tuesday's qualifier against Wales at Wembley, he added: "There are a lot of quality players in my position and a lot of competition. It is only healthy for the team.
"It is really hard to get hold of the shirt. When you do, it is down to yourself to try to keep hold of it.
"There are always going to be people in front of you and over your shoulder so it keeps you on your toes. Everyone is fighting for a place.
"There are some great young players coming through, throughout the squad, and it looks really healthy at the moment."
