Bolton continue their climb to safety

Bolton defeated Newcastle 1-0 at the Reebok Stadium easing their relegation pressures, but increasing Newcastle's worries. Substitute Ricardo Gardner got the winner in the 46th minute with a superb strike with Newcastle fuming over being denied a late penalty.

Wanderers boss Gary Megson told Setanta Sports that referee Alan Wiley was right not to award The Toon a late penalty.

"Whether it's a penalty, I'm not so sure now I have seen it," Megson told Setanta Sports. "Davo is a big lad and (Bassong has) come through the wrong side but it's probably six and two threes.

"In terms of the handball, yes it has hit his hand but what Jlloyd is supposed to do about it I don't know.

"Some you get, some you don't and we were on the receiving end of one at Everton two weeks ago that was given as a handball and a penalty when it wasn't in the box.

"I would think on both occasions that neither was a penalty."

"We generally felt that we could get something today, certainly a draw, and on the balance of the play if you look at the opportunities we had, I thought we had the better opportunities," Newcastle temporary boss Chris Hughton told Setanta Sports.

"We just had that lax moment in the second half were we switched off and then I think we applied enough pressure to certainly get back in the game.

"I can only make comment on the one that could have gone our way and the lad certainly dives at the ball and the referee was in a close enough position and I think it was certainly one that some referees would have given, it could have gone either way.

"I think the more important thing for us is the performance. To come here against a very direct side, a very strong side, and to be able to contain them for the large majority of the game, I think that speaks volumes for the character here."
