Blake: Hasselbaink Burton Albion move proves Rooney Rule not needed

Former England youth team coach Noel Blake is delighted for Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink over his move to Burton Albion.

Blake says the appointment shows the American 'Rooney Rule' is not needed in English football.

Blake insists Hasselbaink landing the manager's job at Burton this week proves black and ethnic minority coaches can get jobs without the need for a quota system.

Blake told the Daily Star: "Jimmy has gone there on merit. He hasn't needed to rely on a 'Rooney Rule'. I want to see black managers get jobs on merit, and Jimmy's obviously proven he is the right man for the job.

"I think if something like the 'Rooney Rule' is brought in there is a danger people start to think you only got your job because of tokenism, and that could be damaging.

"My stance on it is that while it's okay in the USA, this is a different society altogether. Personally I'm against it for one simple reason.

"When we came through as players we got there on merit, determination. For me it has to be the same. The minute we go down that route it's almost racism in reverse."
