Clayton Blackmore says Manchester United made the right decision to extend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's contract.

The Norwegian was recently awarded a three-year contract extension, keeping him at the club until at least 2024.

The decision came after Solskjaer led United to a second-place finish in the Premier League as well as the Europa League final, which they lost to Villarreal on penalties.

There have been questions over Solskjaer's pedigree, given he had only managed Molde and Cardiff City prior to joining United in December 2018.

Another season without a trophy would undoubtedly put pressure on Solskjaer, but Blackmore thinks the United great will deliver in the dugout.

Speaking to Tribalfootball.com, on behalf of Bonusfinder, FA Cup winnner Blackmore said: "I think he's done brilliantly since he came in, he did well in Norway, and he's got people around him who back him up.

"Mick Phelan has a lot of experience and Sir Alex is in the background as well, so they'll be talking all the time and you need that sometimes.

"Sometimes football isn't going your way and you want to change things, but if you trust yourself and your it'll work out.

"Last season we didn't play Cavani enough for me, but football is all about opinions and it's hard to find the balance in the team at times, week in week out.

"It was a crazy season, the team had to play Saturday-Wednesday every week which is really difficult.

"It would be nice for him to win a trophy; he's been to a few semi-finals and finals and we need to make sure we have our strongest team out.

"At times he hasn't done that, but again that's the balancing act you have to go through as a manager, but I'm sure he'll win something as the manager whilst at United."

As well as giving him a new contract, United have supported Solskjaer in the transfer market this summer.

The Red Devils spent £73m to sign Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund last month, while Edinson Cavani's contract was extended for another year.

They are also expected to complete the signing of Raphael Varane from Real Madrid after agreeing a £41m plus add-ons deal.

United are hoping the new additions will help the club compete for the Premier League title this upcoming season, with Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea all expected to challenge.
