Blackburn Rovers boss Sam Allardyce says Mike Ashley has got it right in making Alan Shearer new Newcastle gaffer.

Allardyce still maintains he was ditched too quickly by Toon owner Ashley last season but feels the supremo may have made a shrewd move in bringing in Shearer.

He said: "From a distance, it is a short-term fix. He has come in as the troubleshooter to lift the place.

"There is nobody better to lift things at Newcastle than Alan Shearer. If that spills down into the players, it will be a great move. The proof will come against Chelsea."
