Besiktas' floodlight situation not good for Europa League reputation - Tottenham's Pochettino

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino believes the 'laughable' floodlight condition at Besiktas on Thursday may have a negative reaction on the state of the Europa League.

The lights at the Ataturk Olympiyat Stadium failed after just eight minutes of the Europa League match which the Turkish club eventually won 1-0.

The match was suspended for around 17 minutes while the problem was fixed before the power again went out in injury time which puzzled Pochettino who was critical of the less than desirable situation.

"It is difficult to explain," Pochettino said of the power outages. "We had a chat with the referee and you need to accept the situation.

"It's not possible [to change] nothing. It's frustrating if that happens... it was laughable."

The Spurs boss added: "Maybe yes, it's not good for reputation of the competition.

"Yes, it is always bad when you need to stop two times for the floodlights. If all the stadium switched off the lights, then maybe you would understand because something wrong has happened.

"But all the stadium was with light, except the pitch. But it is not an excuse, we need to look forward.

"We need to see the draw on Monday and to win the Europa League. It's a shame we didn't finish on the top of the table."

The defeat, which was Tottenham's only negative result of the group stage, saw them drop to second place with Besiktas leapfrogging them into first ahead of the Round of 32.
