Barnes insists Liverpool will challenge again for title

Liverpool legend John Barnes is convinced they'll challenge for the title again next season.

Brendan Rodgers' side came agonisingly close to claiming their first league title since 1990 before being pipped by Manchester City during the end-of-season run-in.

Barnes told the Daily Star: A lot of people are so disappointed, but I'm not, because if you said at the beginning of the season 'would you take fourth-place?' I would have said yes.

"Yes, you temper it with a bit of disappointment with the way it ended, but I think more fans are disappointed because they feel, after 20 years or however long it is, that this is a bit of a blip for Liverpool to show some quality and next year they're going to end up being 20 points behind again.

"But that's not the case at all. They'll buy more players, the players are now more used to Brendan Rodgers' tactics, his philosophy, his methods, which it took them all of the first year to get used to.

"And so why should they fall away? They'll still have the same players, even if Suarez goes, the majority of the players will still be there and they'll add new ones, so I'm not saying they're going to win it, but I think they will be there or thereabouts come the end of the season."
