Barcelona signing Robert Lewandowski admits his departure from Bayern Munich was tense.
Lewandowski completed his move from Bayern Munich on Sunday.
He told BILD: "This decision has been in place for a long time.
"But I must emphasise: it was the hardest of my life. I wanted to live somewhere else again and discover something new with my family. My daughter starts school next year, so we had to make a decision. If we hadn't made it now, it probably never would have been possible. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
"It's been eight wonderful years. I hope we can forget with a little distance what happened in the past few weeks. Unnecessary things have happened, on both sides. A lot of false rumours.
"The most important thing is what we have achieved together: the titles, the wins. That's why I also want to thank the fans. Even in the last week, when there was a lot of hassle, they stood behind me. I realise they understood my decision.
"I think both sides are happy now. Bayern get a lot of money, I can go to Barcelona."
