Barcelona coach Xavi welcomes Laporta's words: But new contract can wait

Barcelona coach Xavi says now isn't the time to consider a new contract.

Xavi welcomed president Joan Laporta's words that he wants to offer him a contract renewal. Even so, he reiterated that now is not the time to talk.

"The first thing is (to win) trophies so now is not the time," he said Saturday. "I have one more year on my contract and we'll find the time but first are the objectives we have."

Xavi, however, acknowledged that he would love to be Barça's Sir Alex Ferguson: "I hope I can stay here for many years, but this is Barça and it is very complicated.

"Here what matters are the results, but I'm happy. There is a lot of suffering, but I would love to continue working to win trophies with this club."

The coach indicated that his relationship with the president is good.

"We talk a lot," he added. "He supports us and tells us that he is very happy with the work of all the coaching staff. I'm delighted to be able to continue working with him and, hopefully, the trophies will come."
