Barcelona attempt to close deal for Valencia ace Villa before World Cup

Barcelona want to close a deal for Valencia ace David Villa before the World Cup. Despite his presidency only being weeks away from conclusion, Joan Laporta is determined to clinch a deal for Villa before the South African tournament kicks off.

Sport says Barca and Valencia are locked in stealth talks over Villa's transfer, with coach Pep Guardiola insisting nothing be made public until after the final game of the season this weekend.

Such has been the progress of negotiations that Barca could announce Villa's arrival within hours of the final whistle against Real Valladolid.

Villa's valuation of €40 million has been settled, though Valencia president Manuel Llorente's demand of a straight cash deal has so far been rejected by Barca. Laporta would prefer to lower the cash component by including players in their bid.

Despite the dizzying offers from the Premier League and Real Madrid, Villa is prepared to wait for Barca and Valencia to come to a final agreement.
