Bahrain defeated Uzbekistan 1-0 at the National Stadium to set up an Asian qualifier with Saudi Arabia for the 2010 World Cup. Mahmood Abdulrahman scored the only goal of the match; a brilliant free-kick in the 74th minute to enable Bahrain to finish third on the Group One table.

A two-legged play-off against Group Two's third-placed team, Saudi Arabia will decide which nation then plays off against Oceania champions New Zealand for a spot in South Africa.

If Bahrain can overcome their next two hurdles, it will be the first time they would have qualified for the FIFA World Cup.
