The idea of an Australian Super Cup for Australian football's state leagues has emerged. The idea would come in the way of an annual tournament and be a low-cost showcase for the best state league clubs in the land.

Sydney Olympic coach Aytek Genc has backed the concept, saying it may plug a hole in the number of A-League players leaving to play overseas.

"I I think it's a fantastic idea," the former Socceroo told au.fourfourtwo.com.

"It showcases most of the best players in one place and it cuts down on costs. We'd love to be involved in something like that.

"With so many players leaving [the A-League], we really need to perfect a strong second tier competition. This would be a start.

"It's one of the best things I've heard in a while. We'd be all for something like that.

"These state league clubs need a direction," he added.

"And it's important for the A-League clubs to have something like this.

"If, say, we get in the top two of our state league and qualify for such a tournament against some of the big teams from Melbourne, it creates that bit of rivalry and history instead of just year in year out you play with nothing at the end of it.

"It will require some imagination from the FFA to get something like this organised. I'm sure the clubs would be interested though. No matter what, there has to be something for the second tier in Australia."
