Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin admits Manchester City attempted to sign him in the past.

Godin, who former City boss Manuel Pellegrini signed for Villarreal in 2007, refused to leave Atletico, where he has established himself as one of the best centre backs in the world.

The Uruguayan international told the Daily Mail: “It's true that two years ago, City wanted me when he was there.

“I'm proud that he wanted me, but I feel like just another fan of this club. I'm very happy here.

“I didn't feel that it was the moment to leave."
