Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone hailed Diego Costa for their 2-0 win over Europa League opponents Sporting CP.

It was his first minute assist to Koke that set the Rojiblancos on their way to a 2-0 first leg victory.

"Since Costa came back that's the best match he's played," the coach said to reporters.

"He's been an animal, he ran, he participated in the goals, he pushed hard and he maintained his discipline throughout the game."

Before the second leg takes place, there is the small matter of the Madrid derby, and some of his players were tiring towards the end.

"It's clear that in the end the team suffered tremendous wear and tear throughout the match," Simeone continued.

"Griezmann, Gabi, Saul, Juanfran, Savic... it is logical for how hard we pushed them.

"There is no excuse: we will be fine, as always."
