Athletic Bilbao coach Ernesto Valverde was delighted with their win against Atletico Madrid.

Athletic won 2-0 through goals from Gorka Guruzeta and Nico Williams.

Valverde said: "We don't know what the future will bring, but these are three points that fill us with confidence. Last year we couldn't even tie them. That game also helped us with what we had to do today.

"We played very well. It was a great game and we deserved the victory with perhaps a few more goals in the first half. Atlético had punished us a lot in previous games and our intention was to hit and then be very strong.

"It is a very special day for the club and the match is in keeping with the (125 year) celebration.

"You have to see the buts, but also reinforce what you do well. I say again that we did well and we are satisfied with how it went and that we did not fall due to the lack of a goal in the first half.

"We have faced and beaten a Champions team, but tomorrow we start again."
