Aston Villa defender Cuellar not giving up on Spain call

Aston Villa defender Carlos Cuellar isn't giving up on his Spain dream.

Cuellar missed out on World Cup selection this year.

But he told Villa's website: "I have confidence in myself. If Villa keep doing well and I keep performing, I'd like to think I have a chance of making the squad eventually.

"Villa are well respected overseas as is the Barclays Premier League. Spain are doing brilliantly at the moment and have some amazing players. I haven't been called up by my country yet but I am going to fight every week and hopefully that will be good enough to get in soon.

"The problem is the players who are currently playing for the national team play for teams from Spain like Barcelona, Real Madrid and Valencia and they are playing very, very well. It would be a dream come true to play for my country. I think it is the ultimate accolade for a player.

"Villa have a good track record of producing international players. Look at the likes of James, Gabby, Emile and Ashley for England. Their performances have been recognised and they have been chosen. Hopefully it will be the same for me and Spain.

"If you are playing well and your club is doing good things in the league, you have a chance of being considered."
