Aston Villa boss O'Neill left flat by World Cup

Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill has slammed this year's World Cup.

O'Neill believes the lack of mystery surrounding players in the modern game has made the tournament less interesting.

The Villa Park chief told the Express & Star: "I have to admit for the first time, probably since I was a kid watching the 1966 World Cup, this is the first one where I've missed one or two games.

"I've seen the highlight programmes and kept abreast of what is happening, of course. But overall I've missed one or two games and almost deliberately.

"For the most part, I tend to know a lot of the players playing now. In bygone years you'd have been looking forward to seeing Brazil because they always come up with four or five players that you'd never heard of and they would be really fantastic.

"The same with Argentina and the same with any side - particularly from South America and parts of Europe as well.

"Now you tend to know all the players playing, so that element of surprise has gone."
