Ashley launches kit battle against Newcastle

Newcastle United's former owner Mike Ashley is taking his old team to a competition regulator.

Ashley is said to be unhappy about not being able to sell Toon jerseys at his Sports Direct stores.

There is an agreement between Adidas and his rivals JD Sports, who can sell the shirt.

Sports Direct alleges in its claim that: “The Club has abused its dominant position in the market for the wholesale supply of Newcastle United replica kit in the UK [in breach of competition law] by refusing to supply Sports Direct with the Club's replica kit for the 2024/25 season and granting JD Sports, another UK sports retailer, exclusive rights as a third-party retailer of the Club's replica kit".

Ashley sold Newcastle to Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund back in 2021.

The disliked owner made a tidy profit of around £195 million on his investment in the club through that sale.
