Arsenal's Mertesacker confident of third place finish

Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker is confident the Gunners will secure automatic Champions League qualification despite losing to Swansea. However, defeat for Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday will see them swap places with fourth-placed Manchester United while finishing ahead of second-placed Manchester City is no longer is their own hands.

But Mertesacker said: "We are still positive. We still have a good level of confidence so we are looking forward to the remaining games. It is very important [finishing in the top three] when you look at the schedule so we try to really avoid that.

"You could feel the disappointment in the dressing room last night because we gave so much. We were patient and, especially in the last 20 minutes, we put them under massive pressure."
