Arsenal ponder bid for Olympiakos defender Kostas Manolas

Arsenal are being linked with Olympiakos defender Kostas Manolas.

The Daily Express says the Gunners are preparing to step up their interest in Greek defender Manolas - previously linked with Tottenham and Sunderland - as a replacement for Thomas Vermaelen.

Vermaelen signed for Barcelona last week after Arsenal accepted a £15m offer from the Spanish giants.

But Arsene Wenger has made no secret of his desire to bring in another centre-back following Vermaelen's exit.

Manolas has impressed at Olympiakos - including in the Champions League - since joining the club on a free transfer from AEK Athens last summer.

Manolas nearly joined Everton at the start of 2012 after AEK agreed a fee with the Toffees, only for the player to decline to opportunity to move.
