Arsenal legend Graham urges Villas-Boas to overhaul Chelsea defence

Arsenal legend George Graham has told Andre Villas-Boas to overhaul Chelsea's defence if he wants to bring success to Stamford Bridge.

The ex-Chelsea player has watched the West London club suffer a dramatic decline in recent weeks.

Skipper John Terry, 30, has come in for criticism, with question marks about his age - a suggestion Graham instantly dismissed.

"John Terry is a superb defender and he can play at the highest level for at least another four or five years," said Graham in the Sunday Mirror.

"What has left him exposed is the way Chelsea play. It wouldn't matter if he was 31 or 21 - he and the other centre-back would struggle in the present system. It would make Tony Adams at his best look ordinary.

"The full-backs push on like wingers - Ashley Cole and whoever is a at right back. That leaves Terry and the other central defender with half the pitch to cover.

"That is a lot of ground and it also means the centre backs are wide apart. No wonder they look vulnerable.

"The brief for Villas-Boas was to play attractive and winning football. It should be the other way round. First you get the winning football, then attractive football comes through confidence.

"You always build a platform and then build on that. The way Chelsea play has to change.

"I keep being told how important it is to keep a high line. All well and good but you are then dependent on the front players closing down defenders. Chelsea don't seem to have the players to do that.

"To help the defence, you can't have two full-backs pushing forward. One has to stay if the other one goes forward, so you have a back three rather than a back two. That makes a big difference.

"There are big decisions to be made but Terry is a player I would keep. Definitely."
