Arsenal ease into Champions League last 16

Arsenal only needed a point to progress in the Champions League, but got three as they defeated Standard Liege 2-0 at the Emirates. Overall this was a comfortable victory against Belgium opposition who ended the game with ten men after Mehdi Carcela-Gonzalez was sent off with four minutes remaining after a touchline clash with Cesc Fabregas.

The Gunner took the lead when Samir Nasri took advantage of a mistake after 35 minutes and Denilson struck a spectacular, swerving second from 30 yards in first-half injury time.

The home side dominated in the second period as they did the first, the difference being their failure to take chances.

But Standard carried a threat of their own, backed by a vociferous following, with Dieudonne Mbokani and Gohi Bi Cyriac hitting the woodwork in each half.

Arsenal boss Wenger will be pleased not just with progression in the Champions League but the immediate positive response to Saturday's Premier League defeat at Sunderland.
