Arsenal boss Wenger: Forest Cup clash test of survival

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger sees the early rounds of the League Cup a real survival battle.

The Gunners have predominantly fielded young, inexperienced sides in the League Cup with a preference to nurture their talent rather than win the first trophy of the English domestic season.

The Frenchman admits his philosophy will remain ahead of the Gunners' third round tie with Nottingham Forest, but breaks down the competition into two phases.

"I think it's an interesting cup competition that gives games to all of the members of the squad," revealed Wenger.

"When it comes to the latter stages it becomes passionate. You have to survive in the early rounds which is not going to be easy for us.

"We want to maintain our winning streak which is why it's an opportunity to give everybody good competition and a chance to win a trophy."
