Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is battling to land Ajax defender Gregory van der Wiel.

The Daily Star Sunday says Wenger is facing a battle with Barcelona and Real Madrid to sign Dutch defender Van der Wiel.

The Ajax full-back, 22, said he wanted to join Arsenal in December and is still after a move.

He said: "Of course it's nice to read that Arsenal are interested. I consider myself a good fit for the Premier League.

"Robin van Persie has told me many stories about the Premier League, Arsenal and Mr Wenger. Maybe he can put in a good word for me."

But now the Gunners will have to fight interest from Spain to secure Van der Wiel's services.

The Dutch ace said: "I know that Barca and Real are interested - but now I am only thinking about doing well at the World Cup in South Africa."
