Barcelona defender Javier Mascherano is in "immense pain" after Argentina's World Cup final defeat to Germany.

Mario Gotze scored at the 113th minute to hand the trophy to the Germans in Rio de Janeiro.

"I feel immense pain," Mascherano told reporters after the game.

"We gave all that we could and feel terrible for ourselves and our fans.

"This was our chance. We are so very disappointed."
