Aberdeen players undertake community service for receiving red and yellow cards

Aberdeen boss Mark McGhee has introduced a system of community service for players who receive red and yellow cards. Any Dons player who steps out of line will have to give their time to projects run by the club's community and commercial departments, who liaise with police and council officials.

McGhee told RedTV: "It's in response to all the talk about discipline. I feel very strongly it's a two-way thing.

"The authorities have responsibility to referee but we as clubs and managers have to make sure our players are doing everything they can to play within the laws and make the game as easy as possible for the referee.

"We don't want suspensions, as has been the case on five or six separate occasions already this season.

"So we've decided to put out a strong message that we're supporting the authorities.

"I've never been a manager who felt it was fair to fine players money. I don't think we have any right to do that.

"If any player challenged it, you would probably find it's illegal.

"I felt we had to come up with something that is strong on the players, but also gives a little something back as well.

"We're not about to send players out to dig up roads, but we will introduce an increasing level of fines based on their own time.

"If there's a situation where there is something on like a coaching session or a seminar, then the player who's had a red or yellow card will be available.

"Anyone who gets a yellow will have an hour to give us outside of their work. This is extra to the work the boys already do to help the commercial and community department."
