Nigel Winterburn admits he can't understand why former West Ham United teammate Frank Lampard chose to return to Chelsea.

Chelsea were beaten at Arsenal on Tuesday night - a sixth consecutive defeat for Lampard since taking over as caretaker manager following the sacking of Graham Potter.

For Winterburn, Lampard's decision to take the job is baffling and he admits it could hurt his relationship with the Blues support.

On behalf of Free Bets, Winterburn told Tribalfootball.com: "Well, they were struggling under Graham Potter and his credentials were stronger than Frank Lampard's.

"For Frank, I must say I am surprised he went back.

"He first went back and then he was sacked. He has a huge reputation at Chelsea and has a great understanding with the home supporters. But I think he's now jeopardising that relationship.

"I don't care how much you pay me - and I'm assuming Frank isn't poor - why would he want to go back as interim manager?"

Indeed, former Arsenal left-back Winterburn concluded, shrugging: "If I'm being honest with you, I just don't get it."
