Wenger expects departing NYRB star Henry back at Arsenal

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says he expects Thierry Henry to one day return to the club.

The 37-year old French striker has ended his time in MLS with New York Red Bulls following their elimination from the play-offs on the weekend.

Henry initially left Arsenal for Barcelona in 2007 before returning to north London for a brief loan spell in 2012 while he was contracted to the Red Bulls and he could come back yet again.

However, Wenger is unsure whether or not Henry's imminent comeback will see him grace the pitch as a player or in another role for his beloved Gunners.

"Certainly one day he will come back," Wenger said of the club's all-time leading goalscorer.

"As for what role, I don't know. He deserves respect for his attitude and achievements. I made him start at 17, today he's 37. That's 20 years of competitive football.

"That deserves a huge respect and congratulations not only to what he has achieved but as well on his attitude and his exemplary and his focus on football."

Wenger added that Henry's greatest football achievements came as an Arsenal player but did warn him to think long and hard about what he chooses to do next, perhaps referring to suggestions that he could one day become manager at the Emirates Stadium.

"The best moments of his life and his career have been experienced here," Wenger added. "He's an Arsenal man.

"He has to think do I want to sacrifice all my life to do this job. He has the right to reflect and think what he wants to do now. He has all the qualities.

"At that age I think he doesn't want to play in Premier League. He has to think about what direction he wants to give to his next life."
