Manchester United have urged David de Gea not to move to a new club.
De Gea is now a free agent after his contract expired on Friday.
The Sun says United have requested De Gea not sign for a new club as they seek to sign his replacement.
It's suggested United want De Gea on standby if they fail to find a new keeper.
A United statement read: "David De Gea's contract is due to run out but discussions remain open with the long-serving keeper."
The 32-year-old had already been asked to take a wage reduction from £375,000 to £200,000. However, even that offer was pulled on recommendation of manager Erik ten Hag.
