Villa legend McGrath urges Mourinho to reign in Chelsea striker Diego Costa

Former Manchester United defender Paul McGrath has urged Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho to reign in Diego Costa's antics.

The Aston Villa legend wrote in the Sunday World: "If I was Jose Mourinho this morning I'd be sitting Diego Costa down and telling him to mind his manners over the next few months.

"That's because another suspension for Chelsea's brilliant Spanish centre-forward is one of the few things that could keep the Blues from winning the Premier League title.

"He's a smashing centre-forward, a fine footballer and also from the tough physical tradition that I loved playing against. You know where you stand with Costa, just as I knew what was going on when up against John Fashanu, Mark Hughes, Alan Shearer or Ian Dowie.

"They'd give you a slap or an elbow early on, not designed to injure you, of course, but just a belt that said 'I'm here'. And of course you then had free rein to give one back and it went on from there - a proper physical contest between professionals.

"Costa's like that too, but it pains me to say, as a Chelsea fan since boyhood, that the striker went over the line in the League Cup semi-final."
