Leicester City star Jamie Vardy admits that quitting England has helped him maintain his form at club level.
Vardy does not have to focus on international duty this season, as he quit after last summer's World Cup.
Leicester are now reaping the rewards, as Vardy has 12 goals this season in the Premier League.
The 33-year-old told reporters: "I retired because I needed to rest up, I needed to keep the legs fresh.
"It has definitely paid off. It has helped massively.
"That is one thing I can happily say I don't look forward to and I hate the gym.
"The most I have spent in the gym at Leicester is walking around saying: 'well done lads, get those weights lifted'."
