Van Gaal 'called Gakpo agents' urging him to reject Leeds

Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal told PSV winger Cody Gakpo to stay at the club late in the summer transfer window.

Gakpo had been pushing for a move to Manchester United, but that did not materialise.

He instead had the chance to sign for Leeds United on deadline day.

A move was all but agreed, but Gakpo changed his mind and decided to stay at PSV until January.

Per Leeds Live, Romano recently said: "In the final hours of the transfer window Southampton and Leeds were in a battle to sign Cody Gakpo. Leeds had a private flight to brig him to England, have his medical and sign the contract on deadline day.

"And then it was Louis van Gaal who called the player, who called the agents and say, wait a bit. Do this World Cup as a PSV player and then move maybe in January or in the summer."
