The CST letter was magnificent: It deserved better than an insulting corporate response from Chelsea

COMMENT: The question for Mark Meehan, the Chelsea Supporters' Trust (CST) chairman, is: did they ignore you or just talk past you...?

First, the letter sent by the CST to the club's co-owners was, at least for this column, magnificent. It captured what this column has been banging on these past almost two years about the Todd Boehly ownership. It highlighted the concerns, without getting personal, and showed a degree of football sophistication regarding the well-publicised "irreversible toxicity" warning that Chris Jurasek, the club's chief exec, would do well to heed.

But of course, he didn't. The self-declared non-football fan's response failed to address - or even acknowledge - the key concerns outlined in the letter. Instead he produced a half-page of woke, corporate nonsense. He even threw in the word 'holistic' for good measure. Something more in keeping with a bank or other financial identity fobbing off it's customers, than a football club. Erm, what's Jurasek's background again...?

As we say, give Jurasek the benefit of the doubt. Maybe he was unintentionally talking past the CST. Perhaps this is just how he's built. How he works... Though for this column, given the effort and detail in the CST letter, we'd be more than insulted by Jurasek's response. Indeed, knowing the letter's addressees - Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali - couldn't find the time to put their name to the reply is all more concerning.

For this column, a highlight from the letter was the CST imploring the club to put together a comms team to work with the wider Chelsea support. Again, it's something this column has long championed. The only time the Blues support hear from a club shareholder is when they're offshore and speaking about Chelsea at a finance conference. We've seen Boehly, Behdad Eghbali and Jose Feliciano all talk extensively about their 'investment' at neutral venues in front of a neutral audience. As crazy as it is, since inheriting the club, they've never spoken directly to fans on camera.

That the CST have urged the ownership to speak to the wider fanbase is credit to them. For this column, rightly or wrongly, these Supporters' Trusts and Fan Advisory boards have the perception of egos and gatekeeping. But the CST show no signs of that in their communication with Boehly and Eghbali. Indeed, they're urging Chelsea to expand their comms lines so to reach as many concerned Blues as they can.

And as stated in the letter, time really is of an essence in all this. And its something that Jurasek would do well to humble himself and listen to. This is football. English football. And it's supporters are unique. Those jeers for Mauricio Pochettino. Those chants for Roman Abramovich. They didn't come during a defeat, but in the draw at Brentford. Just as Raheem Sterling was booed in the FA Cup quarterfinal win against Leicester City. As his manager was - again.

As the letter stated: "The Chelsea Supporters' Trust regretfully believes that we are close to, if not already experiencing, a significant shift in supporter opinion that could result in irreversible toxicity, almost irrespective of results on the pitch. Unless the situation improves, this seems likely to manifest itself in more targeted chanting, especially at televised games, and quite possibly more organised, overt, and impactful forms of protest by some sections of the fanbase."

There comes a tipping point when the relationship between the support and the team never recovers. Winning won't solve it. Need evidence, Chris? Just ask Josh Kroenke and how Arsenal devolved in the final years of Arsene Wenger. How Unai Emery was never really given a chance by the Gunners support. And how it took Arteta and a completely overhauled squad to get the relationship back on track. A relationship that has taken a good five years to rebuild. Even after winning the FA Cup in Arteta's first season the club was still on edge.

It was terrible. Toxic. It burned up players and managers. Time's a great healer, but both Wenger and Emery were left drained and emotionally floored in their final days with the club.

And this is what awaits Chelsea unless action is taken. Unless the communication lines are thrown open. And unless they actually focus on building a successful football team. Unfortunately, for this column, the response suggests the owners will happily walk into the fire - and take the fans with them.

Credit the CST. They've tried. But whether it's ignorance or arrogance, it doesn't appear Chelsea are willing to listen.
