Sunderland boss Steve Bruce wants fans to delay their judgment another year.
Bruce has spent more than £50m on players during his 16-month reign and has twice broken the club's record transfer fee.
Sunderland now have the youngest average age in the Premier League but Bruce knows that sort of spending brings higher expectations.
He said: "I'm 16 months in but I'd still like another year to see where we are then. We've made big strides because I wanted to make sure we had a team that had something about them and I think we have.
"We've made something like 30 changes in and out and we've gone for young players."
