Southgate says England door open to Leicester veteran Vardy

England coach Gareth Southgate says he's watching Leicester City veteran Jamie Vardy.

Southgate has told Vardy the door is open if he wants to consider an international comeback.

Vardy, following talks with the England boss, effectively stepped down from international duty following World Cup 2018.

Southgate said: "It's obvious how well he's [Vardy] still playing, and the discussion we had at the time with him was always: 'Look, neither of us close the door.' "[There's] no point in him travelling if he wasn't going to be starting at his age, and I can understand that.

"And we also wanted to look at developing younger players as well. So, I wouldn't see the point in bringing him back in immediately but for sure, the door isn't closed because he's still a top player and still scoring important goals in big matches.

"And he's a character that we've liked having around as well, so yes, that door has always been open between us."
