Southgate: England players wanted Rooney to take No10 shirt

England coach Gareth Southgate says the players wanted Wayne Rooney to have the No10 shirt for tonight's farewell game against USA.

The ex-Manchester United star will enter the pitch wearing the No10 shirt for a final time in the second half, where captain for the night Fabian Delph will hand him the armband.

England players and staff want the 53-goal hero to come on in the 53rd minute as a further tribute — and Roo could be taken off later in the game to receive a double ovation.

Southgate revealed: “Wayne will come on with the No 10, there won't be a No 10 to start.

“The senior players discussed it. Harry Kane said to me, 'Look, we don't think it would be right for him to come on wearing a shirt he hasn't worn'.

“All of our group have huge respect for Wayne and they feel it is fitting his last game should be as the No 10.

“When he puts that shirt on his wall at the end of his career, it will have been a special night and the 10 is the number he has there."
