Ignacio Piatti's proposed loan move to Argentine club San Lorenzo has fallen through.
The Montreal Impact midfielder was being linked with a potential return to his former club with a short-term deal being mooted.
Piatti was hoping to play for San Lorenzo at the FIFA Club World Cup later this year despite only joining the Impact as a Designated Player in August.
Both clubs were keen to get the deal done so Piatti could continue playing in the MLS off-season but FIFA has ruled against that possibility because the player would have been registered with two clubs.
Since arriving in Montreal, Piatti has scored four goals and provided one assist in six MLS appearances for the Impact.
