Salford eager to maintain Man Utd connection with move for Swindon boss Wellens

Swindon Town boss Richie Wellens is a target for Salford City.

The Daily Mail says Gary Neville and Salford City's Class of 92 owners want former Manchester United team-mate and current Swindon boss Wellens as their new manager.

Paul Scholes has been in temporary charge of the League Two club since they sacked Graham Alexander three weeks ago but they want to make an appointment and were impressed with the way Wellens won promotion from their division last season.

Wellens, 40, is a Mancunian who joined United at the age of 10 after being spotted by Sir Alex Ferguson's assistant Brian Kidd.

Salford are co-owned by the Neville brothers, Gary and Phil, Scholes, Ryan Giggs, David Beckham, Nicky Butt and Singapore billionaire Peter Lim.
