Roma coach Mourinho talks Taylor attack, Saudi offers and 'indecent' Chinese proposal

AS Roma coach Jose Mourinho has detailed his fury with ref Anthony Taylor after last season's Europa League final defeat to Sevilla.

Mourinho confronted the match officials in the stadium carpark afterwards, which eventually saw him fined and banned by UEFA.

He recalled to Il Corriere dello Sport: "When I said 'f*in' disgrace' he wasn't there. There were the fourth referee, his assistants, Rosetti and Webb. I know I wasn't elegant, but I didn't insult anyone.

"It is an exclamation, similar to the 'cazzo' of Italy or the 'foda pra caralho' of Portugal. I asked Rosetti if there was a penalty or not, and he didn't answer me. I did the same with Webb, he put a hand on my shoulder and said 'yes, it was a penalty'.

"He did what I would have wanted Taylor to do. If he had told me 'I was wrong, I'm sorry', everything would have ended there and he would have had my respect and admiration. We all make mistakes and Taylor is good, if not very good, I never doubted his honesty.

"The only thing I'm saying is that there was a penalty and that with that penalty we could have won. I didn't like his performance."

On Roma fans seeking out Taylor at the local airport later, Mourinho also said: “I have nothing to do with what happened there. I was surprised by a message from a friend from UEFA: 'You are a football great, publicly criticize the behavior of Roma fans at the airport, I am telling you this because we are friends'.

"My answer was: if Taylor or UEFA apologize to the Roma fans, I will do the same. Then I notified the club and asked for support and strong communication. What made me feel more fragile in these two years was not the sale of Mkhitaryan, or playing with only four central defenders when the normal thing is to have six... The saddest thing has been not feeling supported by the club in that situation.

"I am going to live my four games of sanction, I will not see UEFA in a negative way, I will live them as it is. It will be hard, but now we dream of reaching Dublin and we will play to reach the final again."

Mourinho also revealed: “I received offers from Al-Hilal and Al-Ahli. I called Roma before meeting them, saying that I was not going to accept. On the one hand, I felt imprisoned by the promise I made to the players in Budapest and to the fans after Spezia, but I didn't reject it just because of that. It's not a definitive 'no'. In the past, I turned down the most incredible offer ever received by a manager, when China offered me their bench and that of a club where all the team would have played.

"An indecent economic proposal, out of this world."
