Phil Jones will make Manchester United's match day squad for Wednesday night's clash with Ipswich Town.
The defender has not yet featured for the Red Devils this season after a blood clot was detected in his leg in the summer but will make the bench for the Capital One Cup third round visit of the Tractor Boys.
Marcos Rojo's hamstring injury, sustained in Sunday's 3-2 win over Southampton, leaves Louis van Gaal without three defenders including Luke Shaw and Paddy McNair and the Dutchman admits Jones may have some part to play despite the fact he is not ready for full action.
"I thought we were right on time for Rojo because we changed him in the game and he didn't warn us that he was injured.
"I have to admit that because of the injury of three defenders I shall have him (Jones) on the bench.
"But he is not fit. Maybe he can play 30 minutes. He is a lucky boy that I don't have other substitutes.
"It's not so nice that we have three defenders injured but I can line up 11 players so that is not the problem."
