Jesse Lingard rejected two Premier League contract offers to sign for Nottingham Forest last season.
The former Manchester United midfielder is now a free agent and struggling to find himself a new club.
The Athletic says Lingard chose Forest ahead of offers from Newcastle and Fulham.
Both clubs tabled four-year deals to the midfielder, who instead committed to a 12 month Forest arrangement.
Lingard, 31, registered just two goals and two assists in 20 matches last season.
