L'Equipe says Liverpool and Fulham are keen on Theate.
A left-sided centre-back, the Belgium international only moved to Rennes a year ago from KV Oostende.
He has a deal with Rennes to 2026.
But Theate could again be on the move with Liverpool and Fulham both interested.
