Sunderland skipper John O'Shea believes that the club's experience of relegation battles in recent seasons will be beneficial for them this campaign.
The Black Cats defeated Aston Villa 3-1 on Saturday, but they still languish in 19th spot on the league table with 15 points from 20 games.
When asked if the recent struggles at the Stadium of Light have made him optimistic about survival, he said: "More optimistic?
"Yes in the sense of knowing you have done it and you've shown the character and the attitude and application to move up the table in tough situations in the past.
"We've been there and done it."
